Industrial Production Does Not Have To Be a Runaway Prius

by Bryan on March 15, 2010

With industrial production up 0.1% and Toyota’s PR nightmare running down what I consider the car brand to be, I celebrate my good friends over at Highland Craftsmen for earning the OSHA SHARP Recognition. This adds Highland Craftsmen to a prestigious list of 89 SHARP companies in North Carolina. As a marketing professional I like to talk up the good things in life rather than harp on what is wrong. The runaway brad of Toyota due to faulty accelerator  pedal would be a great topic for conversation as would the increase in industrial production. But today I want to highlight a small manufacturing company out of Spruce Pine, NC that is doing it right.

On Thursday of last week, North Carolina Department of Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry, along with officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) presented the distinguished Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) award to Highland Craftsmen Inc. Notable people on hand included Juleigh Sitton, the Director of Governor Perdue’s Western Office; Mitchell County Manager Charles Vines; Town of Spruce Pine Mayor, Ralph Hise and Town Manager Richard Canipe.

Acceptance into SHARP by OSHA identifies a company as a model for worksite safety and health. Upon receiving SHARP recognition, a worksite is exempt from programmed inspections for two years. After this exemption period is over, the employer may be awarded a renewal of up to three years.

With a number of industry leading awards and certifications, Highland Craftsmen stated that, “We view our most recent recognition, the OSHA SHARP Award as an important achievement that relates directly to our core mission and reflects how we value our employees.” Other awards and certifications include being a Certified and Audited B Corporation, which validates community participation and positive social impact; Cultural Contribution Award from the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce; Chain of Custody certified by FSC, SFI and PEFC which tracks the materials coming from forests with assurance of responsibly managed land and that the materials are legally sourced; Cradle to Cradle Gold Level of Certification, evaluating the environmental footprint of the products a company manufactures but the total processes used.

Highland Craftsmen has a strong economic impact on the surrounding communities of Sprunce Pine, North Carolina.  Their materials are locally sourced, 90% within a 100 mile radius and 100% within a 500 mile radius and all are forestry waste products.  As the original poplar bark shingle manufacturer, they have created economic opportunities for over 700 vendors that did not exist prior to Highland Craftsmen.
